New Zealand Loggings - 19/11/2013

Last night I managed to log another New Zealand station.

549kHz RHEMA BROADCASTING GROUP (AWANUI NZ)

This signal was buried down with 2CR Cumnock however I was able to find a location of my loop aerial where I could null this out enough to get a readable signal.

I also validated 657kHz Southern Star(TITAHI BAY - Wellington) by a station ID announcement.

1386kHz Radio Tarana (HENDERSON)was also fairly strong however I had some bad interference a couple of times on it, I suspect something domestically is causing this.

Out’n About Ultralight Radio DXing - Brady’s Lookout - 16/11/2013

On Saturday the 16th of November 2013 I undertook my first serious ”Out’n About Ultralight Radio DXing” session at Brady’s lookout which is on the Western side of the Tamar River about 17Km from the city of Launceston.

I arrived on site at about 6:25am local time and after negotiating a fallen tree on the track to the top, I found myself overlooking the Tamar River from this excellent location. I setup my camera and took some photos and a short video (see below) before getting in to the purpose of my little session.

From a radio point of view I logged 16 medium wave stations; the furthest being 2EA Newcastle on 1413 kHz. While I didn’t log any really distant or rare stations I was happy with the results and this was a good chance to test this location in preparation for a night time session sometime in the future.

A couple of things which I learnt from this session will help me greatly in the future.
- This location no longer has a seat or table near the top; these have been removed since I was last up there a few years ago. In the future I will be sure to bring a folding chair with me.  I may also look at bring a small folding table with me.
- The case I purchased last week to store / carry my radios is not suitable for this type of use. I had the lid blow away which I had to chase after and I lost two batteries which feel out of it. I have now replaced this with an ABS type hard case with an attached lid.
- The public toilet block does not open until 7am on weekends.
- While shortwave radio is not my main area of interest I did notice some tree which would be suitable for stringing up an aerial for the shortwave bands.

Last night I managed to get in a good hours worth of listening on the band. I was a bit later then normal so the signals were much improved than in the past, I am feeling the effects of the late night today however :(

Overall I logged 10 New Zealand stations and validated a number of Australian and New Zealand stations. I am starting to develop some routines which help in identifying stations and logging my results for later analysis.

Loggings of note: 8/11/2013 - Launceston Tasmania

Last night was my first real decent chance to do some ultralight DXing this week due to work and other commitments. The first thing to note from last night was that we had a lot of rain around, even with my enclosed headphones the rain was still quite loud and at times this made hearing the radio signals quite hard. I also had two crazy cats running around the house which didn't help.

As I have spent the last month searching the band and recording these details on my database I now have a really good idea what is normally received here, this means I can now put my time and effort in to validating what I hear and tracking down less powerful / rarer stations. Based on this, last night I was aiming to hear some New Zealand stations. My results are as follows:

567kHz - Radio New Zealand (National) - Wellington.
Receiver: PL606+LOOP
- 95% sure. Content and voices sounded NZ. Was quite weak in the noise at times. 2BH was also audible on this frequency at times.

747kHz - NEWSTALK ZB - ROTORUA
Receiver: AR1733+LOOP
- 85% sure. Was very down in the noise but what audio I could hear sounded like New Zealand voices and they were carrying a story on a new mining venture in New Zealand. Some audio was cut off by 7PB from Hobart.

1386kHz - Radio Tarana (Indian) - Wellington
Receiver: AR1733+LOOP
- Not as loud as last time I heard it but still enough signal to validate it. Audio totally dropped out at one point but came back quickly.

Loggings: 2/11/2013

Last night was my first time using my new Tecsun PL-606 ultra light radio and AN-200 loop antenna, the results of this combination were simply amazing. I was expecting some good results but nothing like what I found once I started tuning the band with it.

After getting to grip with how the PL-606 works and checking some local frequencies I started searching the band. The low end of the band was sounding fairly normal and all the frequencies I normally hear were coming in loud and clear, it was not until I hit around 945kHz that I started to log some new stations, this continued until the top of the band. In the end I logged 12 new Australian stations, not a bad effort for an hour.

Once I reached the top of the band I started working my way back down when on 1386kHz I could hear a weak signal, this frequency is not used in Australian at all and it was not bleed over from any other frequency, the programming also didn't sound like anything I had ever heard. I checked my NZ medium wave frequency list and found a station name for this frequency. At this point I moved in to a different room and I was able to get clear enough audio to be able to understand what was being said. A quick check of their webpage with an online stream and I can confirm my first international DX catch on medium wave :)

Overall it was a very enjoyable couple of hours and my first international DX catch was icing on the cake. My Tecsun PL-606 and loop aerial really worked well and I can see myself logging many more stations with them.
